Acupuncture

Definition

Acupuncture is a time tested form of medicine where fine, sterile needles are used to prick the skin for the purpose of realigning the energy pathways of the body to promote health.

Basics

While acupuncture is not a replacement for western medical care, it is very effective in supporting the treatment of many conditions. It provides a relatively safe, drug free method for addressing illness by encouraging one’s own body to come back into balance.

Several modalities of treatment fall under acupuncture including; needling, cupping, gua sha, electro-stimulation, acupressure and other modalities.

  • Needling
    • The insertion of fine, sterile needles into the body for the sake of harmonizing and re-balancing the body’s energy.
  • Herbal Therapy
    • Use of prescription formulas that are all herbal or plant based to help treat illness or imbalance.
  • Cupping
    • Glass or plastic cups placed on the body using a vacuum technique for the purpose of drawing out stagnation, pain or unwanted energy from the body, or for the purpose of tonifying the body, depending upon the technique utilized.
  • Gua Sha
    • A method of scraping the more superficial tissues of the body for the purpose of removing stagnation, pain, or unwanted energy.
  • Electro-stimulation
    • A technique of applying very small currents of electricity to acupuncture needles for the purpose of re-directing the body’s energy.
